The Falmouth Academy GSA, or Gender and Sexuality Alliance, is a welcoming community for all who wish to join. The club’s purpose is to provide a safe space for the LGBT+ members of the Falmouth Academy community. Allies are always welcome. The GSA is an in-school club that meets at lunch every Thursday. In meetings, discussions range from problems of representation in mainstream media to a history of LGBT+ artists and scholars, as well as potential projects the GSA could do to help improve the local community.

Over the year, the GSA works to fulfill projects that either raise awareness of the LGBT+ community and its colorful history, or enrich the Falmouth community. In the past, the GSA has held movie nights, donated books to the library, raised money for local shelters for LGBT+ youths, and, of course, hosted the ‘Somewhere Over the Rainbow’ school dance last year, which was a major hit. Recently, the GSA also held an in-school book swap, where students traded favorite books with LGBT+ representation to give everyone a chance to share the wealth of literature.

The GSA has also begun hosting symposiums on LGBT+ related subjects ranging from artists such as Keith Herring to the work of authors such as Jane Austen and Virgina Woolf, a personal favourite of club leader Alice Tan, ‘21. Overall, the Falmouth Academy GSA is a welcoming and open community that accepts people from across the spectra of gender and sexuality, and hopes to raise awareness and build discussion surrounding LGBT+ issues.
